About
World Tourism Day
World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27. It was established at
the Third session of the UNWTO General Assembly held in Torremolinos,
Spain in September 1979. The purpose of celebrating this day is to create
awareness that tourism is vital to the international community and to
show how it affects the social, cultural, political and economic values
worldwide. September 27 is important since on that day in 1970, the Statutes
of the World Tourism Organization were adopted. The adoption of the statutes
is considered to be a milestone in global tourism. The theme of this year’s
World Tourism Day is, “Tourism Opens Doors for Women”. It is an occasion
to celebrate women’s achievements in the tourism sector and stimulate
continuous action in support of UN’s 3rd Millennium Development Goal:
Promoting Gender Equality and Women Empowerment.
